The Male POV in My New Travel Romance

Hi Friends and Family,

I’ve been deep into writing/finishing the third book in my Scottish Stars Series, an enemies to lovers travel romance with an Outlander-style TV show, Beneath the Starlight. And do you know which scenes I’ve been working on and/or expanding the most recently? Scenes with the male point of view.

My absolute favorite romance books are dual point of view with the female heroine and male love interest. I love reading the unique point of views of both characters, getting into their heads, and understanding them inside and out. Don’t you?

And it also so happens, I love writing in dual point of view. In my two, previous books in my Scottish Stars series, the female leads’ point of view accounted for 70% of the book, while the male leads’ point of view accounted for about 30%. If you’ve read the first two books, you’ve gotten to meet male leads, Bryce Fraser and Rory Cameron (swoon!). For this novel, I’m learning toward a closer split in the story because of the male lead’s backstory, and it’s been such a fun challenge.

For love stories, I believe it’s integral to the romantic journey to show both sides. Since I’m a woman, I work diligently to ensure the male point of view is accurate. I run ideas by my husband or male friends. For this particular book, I’ve also asked my Scottish friend, James, quite a few questions!

Oftentimes, when I share a male POV scene or dialogue, I’m spot on. Sometimes, I’m a smidge off, and other times, my husband laughs. “A guy says that?”

“Yes! My guys.”

Do you blame me? I’m a romance author. I’m penning romance with male heroes that women will love. Of course, each male hero is fictional, but he also shares qualities and characteristics with my husband, friends, acquaintances, and even strangers.

The main character in Beneath the Starlight is Hugh Macrae. Ladies man and well-known Scottish actor, Hugh, is a Scot through and through and lives up to his wild man nickname on set and off. He made his mark as Alexander James Mackenzie’s cousin and warrior sidekick in the show, Swords of Scotland, and makes fans swoon with his long locks and rugged look. He may have a reputation, but there’s one woman who’s been out of reach since he first met her: Eleana Evans. He hasn’t been able to keep his eyes off Eleana since. And he’s never shared his secrets…or his past until now.

Through Hugh’s point of view, you’ll:

  • Learn about his secret past

  • Understand his behavior (including those shared in previous books)

  • Feel his raw attraction for Eleana and then the sweet transition to real, meaningful love

  • Connect to his vulnerabilities and struggles

  • Root for him to succeed and grow as a person and partner

  • And maybe even fall for him, too
